Captain Shea Lara is the current leader of The Veiled Duchess. The most feared pirate ship in all of Neried. And now, after completing her former mentor’s final score, she’s retiring. Everything seems to be coming to an end… Until a mysterious stranger drags her back into the fold with an offer for a score she can’t refuse. All she has to do is kidnap the crowned princess of the northern Queendom, Princess Joana of Arethusa. The prize is just within reach. But sparks fly as the two women collide. And an obscured threat that could upturn Shea’s entire world storms on the horizon. She’ll face it alone unless she can allow herself the support she needs from old and new allies alike. Something’s coming and Shea is at the center of it.

Review

Okay, as soon as you saw “lesbian pirate story” you knew I was signing up for this one, right?

There is so, so much to love about this story. Shea is a kick-ass heroine without her story being all about her trauma. She’s protective of her crew, she’s smart, she’s funny, and she uses every advantage she can find. (Hello, pirate!)  She adapts to every situation, even when it seems all hope is lost. At the end of the day, Shea is everything I want in a character.

Jo is a little harder to understand. She’s had a privileged upbringing, and she just kind of springs into the story fully formed. There’s always an explanation for why she’s good at something and that’s fine, but I guess I’m just not wowed by her. Shea is wowed by her, and this creates a lot of conflict between them and between Shea and her crew.

There are real consequences to Shea for love. Not so much to Jo. There’s a moment in the end where some sort of consequence is attempted, but it kind of falls flat. We, as readers, know something is in the works to try to change the scenario and so it’s hard to believe the consequences are real. Jo doesn’t, and that’s important, but I guess it’s just harder to immerse myself in Jo’s point of view than Shea’s.

Shea’s arc is easy to follow, and it’s easy to get caught up in her story. Her arc also ties into the arc of her crew taken as a whole, which is honestly a masterstroke and I loved how Menesini handled that.

For most of the book, the story focuses on Shae and Jo. Jo’s position naturally involves politics – she’s to inherit the crown. They meet entirely because of a plot involving said crown, which I won’t discuss further because spoilers. Most of the book involves very flesh-and-blood people who live an earthly life, for all that this is a fantasy setting. Toward the end of the book, however, there are strong hints that there are greater forces at play and I’m not sure how I feel about it. This is the first book in a trilogy (I think, it could be a series) so I won’t judge until I know.

Because of course I’m going to read the rest of the series. Lesbian pirates, come on.

I loved the adventure. I loved Shea, and I loved her crew. (Which I just typo’ed as “crue,” proving the eighties never really left us.)  My jury is still out on the greater forces, and I didn’t quite feel the emotion required for the romance. I definitely am not done with Shea and the crew of the Veiled Duchess, though. I look forward to their next adventure.

This story sounds very well balanced and with an easy to root for main character as well! Lovely review! 🙂
