Deep in the untamed wilderness of the notorious Darien Gap, a soldier wakes. Injured, he has no memory of who he is or why he is there until a beautiful woman tells him his name. But can he trust her?

When Mari Dias stumbles upon Chris Shaw in the jungle—a place many risk but few survive—she enlists his help to escape a country ruled by the very family who hunts her.

Review

This one was a real switch from so many of the books I’ve been reading, even different from most of the romantic suspense things I’ve been reading, and I have to say it was a refreshing change. Not to say I haven’t enjoyed the books I’ve been reading, but this was just very different.

Mari was an interesting character. She initially decides to lie to Chris and claim they’re married. (I apologize if this is a spoiler; it’s a huge issue.)  At first, this infuriated me both as a human being and as a reader. Then I had to stop and re-evaluate my position. Mari is in a position where she can trust absolutely no one, where anyone in uniform is more likely to cause harm than good, and Chris is an unknown man in uniform. She’s dependent on him to get her out, but if she trusts him she’s an idiot.

And I am not here for stupid heroines.

She tells the lie because it’s the only way to keep herself safe. I can’t fault her for that. I have to admire her ingenuity.

Chris is a stand-up guy, the kind we’d all like to have on our side. I tend to think he’s a little too trusting considering that he’s a Navy SEAL, but this is a small detail. He’s also had a head injury recently, so maybe I shouldn’t judge him too harshly there.

Watching Mari and Chris fight their way to safety and fall in love along the way is fun, and it is actually beautiful. I found it relaxing, despite the ever-present danger from guerillas, cartels, and snakes. (Yes, snakes. If you’re afraid of snakes maybe give this one a pass, and also don’t try to cut through any jungles on foot.)

There were a few issues. They weren’t enough to ruin the story for me, but they did give me pause.

The first came from Chris and his apparent lack of fluency in Spanish. Sometimes he seemed to know what was going on, but other times he simply hears someone yelling in Spanish. If he’s a Navy SEAL operating in South America, he’s received location-specific training and should understand more than just the fact that Mari is yelling at him in Spanish.

The second was Mari’s apparent fluency in English. If I was reading the text correctly, she didn’t come from a wealthy family and lived in a smaller town. English may well be taught in school, but if she’s not in a big city (with a lot of foreign traffic) and she hasn’t been in an elite school or whatever how much English is she going to retain from classes?  I studied French for ten years. I’m sure I could pick it up again, but I would not be able to speak to a native speaker with a head injury about his head injury with any kind of accuracy, fluency, or ease.

Whatever, it worked for the story. It just gave me a moment.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I loved Mari’s strength and the way Chris was protective of her without being overbearing. I’d recommend Eye of the Storm to anyone who likes romantic suspense. Unless they’re afraid of snakes.
