Whoever thought achieving career goals could be boring? Not Duncan Witten, but here he is at forty-one, in his dream job… and hating it. Throw it all away for a challenge? Yes, please!

If only Dunc had known his challenging new job came with Paul Hanks, a man who redefines “stubborn.” They need to work together to meet targets, but thanks to Dunc’s idiot predecessor, Paul won’t take his calls or reply to emails.

There’s only one solution: travel across the country and confront Paul face-to-face. It’s time to take things out of the office.

Review

My biggest complaint about this book was the length, and that’s not the author’s fault at all. Okay, if you want to get technical about it, it’s totally her fault because she wrote the book. I didn’t know how short it would be when I grabbed the opportunity to review it through Other Worlds, Inc. I might have missed the length in the description, I don’t know. Either way, it was too short, because I absolutely loved Dunc and Paul.

Okay, true, people who work together should never, ever date. There are just too many ways for it to go wrong and all of them end messy. That said, this is romance, which means we can keep things a little less than realistic for purposes of creating joy* and if we want to let a workplace romance happen we can do that.

(Looks at my own body of work a little nervously.)

Moving on.

In all seriousness, there will be people who definitely don’t want to read about a workplace romance in a telecom company. For me, it reminded me of business school, but business school before I showed up for my first day of classes. Everything was shiny and hopeful, and both Paul and Duncan truly had their workers’ best interest at heart.

I was truly envious of the way Masters was able to make both personalities unique and have them shine so nicely even in such a short story. Again, I would have liked to see this drawn out a little more purely for my own enjoyment, but I did enjoy this story and I’d happily read more.

As mentioned above, I received a free copy of this book for my own reading pleasure.

* Within reason, obviously.
