He switched it to her. “What about you, ever been in love?”
She shook her head. “No way.”
“Don’t believe in it?”
“No, the opposite. Like you I guess, I saw it with my parents. When my mom died, it killed my dad. It killed me. I guess I just never wanted to feel that kind of pain again.”
She shrugged, taking a sip of her bourbon. They were silent for another minute.
“Better to have loved and lost . . .” he finally started, trying to break the tension. She threw a wadded-up cocktail napkin at him.
“Really? A pat bartender aphorism? I’m gonna need another free drink for that one.”
He had just opened his mouth to respond when another guy, barely drinking age and wearing a backwards Red Sox hat, slid into the seat next to her.
She was still looking at Sam when the kid pulled her hair aside, skimming her shoulder—at this point Sam was ready to toss his drink in the kid’s face—and whispered something in her ear. She never broke eye contact with Sam, smiling slightly, as the young man got up abruptly and walked confidently toward the bathroom, not looking back.
“What the hell was that about?” Sam whispered.
She smiled wider, lowered her head conspiratorially. “A proposition.”
“Seriously? He’s like nineteen.”
She shrugged. “Too young to know he couldn’t handle me.”
God, she’s sexy.
“Mind if I ask—what did he say? I love to hear what lines these assholes use.”
“Are you putting together a blog or something?”
He laughed. “Nah, I just find them amusing.”
“Well in that case. He said, ‘Meet me in the bathroom in two minutes and I’ll fuck your brains out up against the wall.’ ” She said it matter-of-factly, but he still felt it in his groin.
He raised an eyebrow. “Straightforward. To the point, I guess.”
“Absolutely.”
“Not very creative. Or specific, for that matter.”
“No, but I appreciate the effort,” she said, then dropped her voice. “But I think I’ll wait for a better offer.”
He felt himself redden. Dammit.
“I don’t know, that was pretty good. I’ve heard much worse.”
“Oh yeah?” She was smiling now. “You get propositioned a lot, do you?”
“Beer goggles are an amazing phenomenon.”
“Tell me.” She leaned forward, pressing her breasts up against the bar in a way that was going to make it hard for him to focus.
“ ‘I want to sit on your face.’ ‘I want you to come on my tits.’ ”
“Wow, girls are fucking dirty! And much more specific! Doesn’t do it for you?”
“In theory, sure. In porn, absolutely. But in reality, I’d rather be buried deep inside you when we come,” he said, watching her face.
She let out a husky laugh. He really, really wanted her now.
“I see what you did there,” she said, rolling her eyes, but he could tell she was intrigued by the way she kept toying with her chain. “Clever.”
They both stared at each other for a second, the electricity practically arcing between them.
Finally he spoke. “Want to get out of here?”
“Sure, you can fuck my brains out, then come on my tits.”
She answered too quickly. Joking, he knew, but not entirely.
“I thought you’d never ask.”
