This was a fantastic little fake-marriage romance that will absolutely warm your heart. Alex is in a rough spot, and Finn thinks he’s about to get screwed over by his meddling aunt. Neither one of them is warned ahead of time that he’ll be marrying a man. This shouldn’t be a problem for Alex since he’s gay, although he balks. (I guess he’s surprised anyway? Worried about dealing with homophobia? It isn’t quite explained.) Finn is a little more complicated and problematic.

It certainly isn’t insta-love. They go through some twists and turns, and they don’t like each other at all at first. I can’t blame Alex for not being particularly impressed with Finn. Finn is torturing himself with guilt for the way things ended with Catherine, and he’s torturing his liver with booze. While I’m generally in favor of alcohol, it’s not the best first impression to make on your new stranger-husband.

Fortunately, Alex is compassionate and patient, and thinks Finn is hot, and he is willing to help Finn work through whatever his issues are. Because Alex is a compassionate soul, he and Finn find their way to a happily ever after. And, in the end, I wanted them to. Alex is an emotionally satisfying book that I definitely needed to read this week.

There are a few issues I should probably bring up. For me, they didn’t necessarily diminish the quality of the book. Some people’s mileage may vary, and that’s okay.

I don’t want to give any spoilers away, but I will tell you that Finn has an issue that led to his guilt regarding his wife. The solution to this issue leads to their happily ever after, but some readers may be put off by the fact that asexuality was not mentioned as a possibility. It didn’t bother me, but I did kind of wonder if it might be the case at some point.

A couple of storylines, like Alex’s business partner, just kind of fizzle off into nothing. It’s kind of okay, I didn’t wind up needing them to be major plot points. (Murder would have been welcome, but that’s just me.) When the storyline with the business partner was resolved, I kind of stared at the page for a moment and said, you mean that’s it?

Like I said, these weren’t major issues for me. I found the book relaxing and soothing, and I think many readers will too. Both Alex and Finn wind up being likeable, the side characters are fun and interesting, and even the interfering aunt turns out to be kind of awesome.
