Forgiveness is not Gabriel
D’Ange’s strong suit.
A self-appointed soldier of God with a penchant
for ruthlessly punishing his enemies, he vanished after Anne Lawrence stabbed
him with his own dagger.
The smart thing would be to let him go.
Unfortunately, Anne’s life isn’t just lonely
without Gabriel. It’s insufferably boring.
Determined to heal the rift between them, she
goes in search of her tempestuous former lover, black parasol in hand and daeva
magic crackling at her fingertips. But Gabriel has his own plans afoot
and Anne finds herself drawn into one of his tangled webs, much against
her better judgment.
Gabriel’s nemesis has reappeared in Brussels, a
vile slaver who’s plundering the Congo Free State with the blessing of King
Leopold. Gabriel might be willing to give Anne a second chance, but not
until Jorin Bekker’s head is lying at his feet.
Back in London, the quasi-reformed necromancer
Balthazar sets his sights on the same quarry. He holds a very personal grudge
against Bekker — and killing him might be the only way to keep
Gabriel D’Ange from Balthazar’s own throat.
When the hunters collide at a lavish gala thrown
by the king, Anne learns just how far she’ll go to save the man she loves.
Note: The Necromancer’s Bride is the sequel to A
Bad Breed, which should be read first.

Review
Okay, see that “Note” in the blurb? I didn’t have A Bad Breed, so I didn’t read it first. I still loved this book, and while it definitely read like there had been some shenanigans prior to page one I was able to follow along without a problem.
And obviously, since I gave it five martinis, the book was a delight despite the occasional gap in my backstory fluency. I’m not saying you shouldn’t read A Bad Breed, because the author deserves every dime you can throw her way. I’m just saying I didn’t.
What truly made this book stand out for me was Anne. Anne is a badass heroine, a creature capable of unimaginable destruction and mayhem who has voluntarily chosen not to kill again because she made a mistake once. And then the man she loves is in danger, and she makes a choice.
It’s not that she loses her marbles and just goes all mindless because Twu Wuv or anything like that. She makes a conscious choice to save him, and reveal just what she’s been capable of while she’s been running around in these terrible, constrictive Victorian outfits letting men think they’re the conquering heroes and whatnot.
(This may seem vaguely spoiler-ish, and I apologize. It doesn’t feel spoilery to me, because it’s a romance and therefore must have a happy ending. Still, I’m sorry if I’ve revealed anything you wanted to keep secret.)
There are side characters who seem well developed and interesting. Ross includes characters of color and doesn’t shrink away from some of the issues these men faced in their times, but doesn’t make their suffering their entire character. I enjoyed their presence on the page. I enjoyed some of the other side characters as well, such as the double agent and his servant.
My jury is still out on Gabriel. In his favor is the fact that he is in no way shape or form bothered by Anne’s awesome. Indeed, he is proud of her and her ability to cut through the – er, red tape, as it were. In other hands, this would be unbelievable for a religious man of his time (or any man of his time, honestly.) Ross pulls it off and I believed him wholeheartedly.
I had a hard time connecting with him, however. I think it’s just because I was so bowled over by Anne. Which – let’s face it. Anne blew everyone away, because she was everything.
I highly recommend this book, for you and everyone in your orbit.

Thanks so much for the review, I’m really glad you enjoyed it! If you get a chance, do check out A Bad Breed, you’ll find Gabriel’s character much more developed in that one, along with his gloriously crazy backstory 🙂 I hope you’d still find it a fun read even knowing what happens in the next one since there’s lots of Anne (and yep, I fell in love with her, too). Cheers, Kat
I’ll read anything with Anne in it! (To be fair, I’ve already put A Bad Breed on my TBR list 🙂 I loved The Necromancer’s Bride that much.)
Thanks for hosting today, Jaye! Glad you liked it! 🙂
